That’s a good question but it’s kinda left up to you to decide whether you want a pedal that’s really, amazingly good one thing; which is being an accurate replica of a Roland RE-201 or a pedal that does an above average job of replicating a number of famous delay units.
Hey, great tumblr. It's awesome to read what others have to ask and every wise gear answer you can give.
I'm planning to get a reverb pedal, and I tried a holy grail recently. I didn't like it that much, and my friend told me that the Cathedral could do much more than the HG. I'm still not sure I will like it, and I recently heard a demo of the T-Rex Lovebug Reverb and was blown away- I didn't expect it could sound that good on the spring setting. Any recommendations? My band sounds like a mix between MMJ and Band of Horses, because those are our principal influences. You get the idea of what I'm looking for.
I’m a HUGE MMJ fan myself I actually saw them last week at the Pantages. So I know exactly what you mean. I’ve been trying to get that Dondante tone too. I don’t know how long you’ve been following this blog but we actually posted Jim’s pedalboard a while back. Here it is:
I'm going to the usa next month, and I won't go back home empty-handed. Since the import tax burden in my country is completely absurd, my intention is to compensate for all the years I spent using second-rate equipment and spend some cash in every kind of effect I've always wanted. Then, to control my budget, I researched the options on the web, considering the cost-effectiveness of some pedals and made a list with the results. Having never used most of these, I would like to get a feedback. Here are the winners:
Reverb: EHX Holy Grail (or maybe a TC Hall of Fame or a Malekko Chicklet?)
Overdrive: T-Rex Tonebug
Fuzz: EHX Big Muff Pi
Tremolo: EHX Pulsar (or a Malekko Trem or a Carl Martin Surf Trem or a Guyatone VT-3?)
Chorus: TC Corona (or a MXR M234?)
Phaser: Malekko Phase (or a Small Tone EHX?)
Delay: Ekko 616
Octave: all I found was too expensive, so i'll look for some bargain in the 'used' pile. (really wanted a EHX POG)
As you can see, there are many doubts in this head of mine, and that's why I'm asking you for a light.
* Just for the record: I already count with a DS-1 and a DD-7.
Alright first things first; throw the DS-1 into the garbage or try to get it autographed by a famous guitarist and sell it to some idiot on eBay.
Reverb: Honestly all of the reverb pedals you have listed are great choices. I just tell you this the Hall of Fame is better than the Chicklet and the Chicklet is better than the Holy Grail. Also if you get the Holy Grail make sure it’s the one with the big chassis.
Overdrive: The Tonebug is actually really cool. You should also check out the Fulltone Fulldrive 2.
Fuzz: Great choice, but if I were you I would stock up on fuzz. Hit us up later with some fuzz choices and I’ll screen them for you.
Tremolo: Try your best to get a Fulltone Supa-Trem, but if you can’t just go with the Pulsar.
Chorus: The Corona is pretty good, if you want something a bit cheaper get an EHX Small Clone. However if you wanna go all out you can get an EHX Polychorus or an Earthquaker Devices Sea Machine.
Phaser: The Small Stone is really good, but make sure you get the one with a big chassis, otherwise get the Malekko Phaser.
Delay: Get a Line 6 DL4.
Octave: Get on craigslist and look for used POGs in the area that you’re gonna visit.
If I'm looking for a subtle tremolo, nothing choppy or percussive, do you think I'd do fine with a good ol' boss tremolo? We've also been looking at the Diamond Tremolo, Earthquaker Devices Hummingbird, and the BYOC Tremolo...
hi, have you had a look at the EH germanium4 big muff? beacuse my actual main distortion its a boss mt2, but I want to change for a big muff, and when I was looking for prices, I found de germanium 4 big muff, but its good or I should get de original muff??
Get the original Muff. You can get one at a really good price on Craigslist or ebay. As for the Germanium, yuck city.
Hey, thanks for your time. I'm writting to see if you have any idea what could be wrong with a Big Muff Pi reissue that I have. Sometimes when turning the effect off the pedal will cut out my signal completely. If I wiggle the switch a bit it comes back. Any ideas?
Probably some loose wiring inside. Shouldn’t be too hard to fix if you know your way around the inside of the pedal.
I've been using a holy grail plus for a few years now. Just got a 70s Twin Reverb, so don't need spring anymore, but I find the Hall on the grail + just doesn't really stand out.
Do you have any hall reverb recommendations?
I use a Boss RV-3. It actually doesn’t come with a spring reverb feature, it’s one of the really great ’90s Boss pedals so it comes with like so many settings that they have to use numbers for position marking. Here’s a picture of the settings:
I see you guys love the Big Muff, but I was looking at the ZVex fuzz factory and it seemed like a more versatile pedal. How do you compare the two? Do you just prefer the sound of a Big Muff?
They’re two very different pedals. The Big Muff is great by itself but really shines when you stack in on top of other sources of distortion, overdrive, fuzz. While the Fuzz Factory is a stand alone, self oscillating, fuzz monster that’s supposed to be a more tweakable version of the Super Fuzz.
Hi my pedalboard consists of - BBE Boosta-grande, Line 6 DL4, EHX Echo 1, Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde, Pro-Co Rat, Big Muff and some obscure tuner any other pedals to fill out my sound to suit music like the strokes and arctic monkeys??
You should look for some deep chorus/vibrato and tremolo pedals.
Hi thanks for getting back to me, much appreciated. I now reckon i might get a just a reverb pedal instead to get a better sound. Which would you recommend highly? I am thinking Holy Grail Nano, is it good? Also do you know of any difference between the Grail and Grail Nano and if so what?
Thanks very much again.
I have an old pedal, my dad gave me, he found it in his studio and no one claimed it, so he gave it to me... a DOD juicebox overdrive, a green pedal... sounds very crappy, what about this pedal? is it worth something?
As far as I can tell it’s worth about $30 there’s one on eBay for like two dollars.
Hi, I was wondering if you could help identifiy 2 of the 3 pedals on this pedalboard (Bassist for the band Yuck), http://www.flickr.com/photos/magnus_d/4847268385/in/photostream/ I can see the far right is a big muff but no idea on the other 2, cheers
i am not at my home computer right now (have not been since last july) and am also separated from my pedals since then but i built my own pedal, which i am sure might spark some interested in all the muff lovers out there.
i actually studied all the different muff versions out there and combined some them in one "super muff". not only does this therefore contain most of the different and famous muff versions, but it also creates new ones, since you can mix different values of certain capacitors and resistances. sounds nice, doesnt it? :P
i would love to give you some pics or sound files, but, as i mentioned, its still at home and i might not get there until july or august this year
Report back to us as soon as you can, this sounds like it could be awesome.
Where is the best place to get used pedals?
I've used ebay for it in the past but a pedal I got off of there broke after a couple weeks so I'm second guessing it.
I'd rather check them out in person, but that isn't always an option...
is there anywhere that is particularly reliable?
Hi guys. Cheers from Spain.
ProCo Rat, ProCo Rat Turbo, mxr distortion+, boss bluesdriver, mxr micro amp, bass big muff. In this little list what's the best pedal to overdrive/boost power and use together a big muff usa pedal?
Thanks a lot!
I'm considering getting an RV-3 because I've hear a lot about the pedal, although I've never been able to try one(I figure if I really don't like it, I can try reselling it). I already have a couple delay pedals, though, so do you think it would be better to buy a reverb only pedal, especially since it'd probably be a lot cheaper?
I also don't really know much about what reverb pedals are out there.
I actually have a Boss RV-3 and I think the plate reverb alone on that thing makes it worth getting.
Would you agree that the Valvetronix Vox amps are awful with pedals ? I can't get a good sound out of it at all and it just makes my Big Muff sound really muddy.
I'm into a lot of stuff like The Twilight Sad, Mogwai and My Bloody Valentine so if I get a new amp I'd like to play stuff like that and have one that sounds really good with my pedals. I've been looking at Orange ones but what do you recommend ?
There are very few solid state amps that don’t suck. The Vox Valvetronix series are not included in that small group.
All the bands you listed actually use Marshall half stacks. You can’t go wrong with a good Orange though. No other amps get that thick, beautiful, saturated distortion.
I just bought the Danelectrode power supply to daisy chain all my pedals and you can lower the volts from 3-9 To try different tones from pedals. In my experience with i it really hasn't done much to my lil Big Muff and just cut out the LPB1 Do variable 3-9 volt power supplys change anything?
Depends on the pedal. I have the same thing from a different brand and it doesn’t work at all on some pedals but with others (V9 Big Muff, Digital Delay) it does some weird stuff. It really depends on how the pedal is, you never really know when it’ll work.
